Jacob Hawkins Hangs On To Win Wild “Buckeye Nationals” At Atomic Speedway!

(Middlebourne, WV) The Renegades of Dirt Modified Tour returned to action over the weekend with one of the biggest shows of the season at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Inaugural “Buckeye Nationals” would showcase a record setting purse that included $5,000 to win for the Renegades of Dirt and $50,000 to win for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. The result attracted a super talented field of nearly one hundred total race cars among the two classes, featuring, fifty four of the region’s best modified aces ready to do battle on the 3/8th mile oval.

Although rain tried to plaque the racing surface all weekend long, Brad McCown and crew would not be stopped. Track crews worked tirelessly to provide a surface that would be multi-grooved which provided some great racing on both Friday and Saturday night. Action got underway on Friday with time trials for the Renegades of Dirt where immediately Jacob Hawkins of Fairmont, WV would earn the top honors with a time of 15.878.

Next on the docket for Friday nights preliminary activities were four heat races that would see the top three cars transfer with the top two headed to a redraw for Saturday’s A-Main. Heat #1 would be won by hometown regular Jackie Boggs followed by fast qualifier Jacob Hawkins and Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Rick Aukland. Heat #2 would witness another late model regular at Atomic earn top honors, Jason Montgomery. Montgomery was followed by Warren, PA’s Dan Davies, and Columbus, IN’s Devin Gilpin. Heat #3 saw Mooresville, NC’s Nick Hoffman take the checkers followed by Tanner Wilson, and Kenny Johnson. Zanesville, OH’s Jesse Wisecarver would dominate heat #4 followed by John Burdette, and Greggie Oliver.

On Saturday night forty-three racers would return to duel as the event was set to crown a first ever “Buckeye Nationals” modified winner earn the $5,000 dollar payday. The night would start with the first of two B-Mains for the Renegades of Dirt that would take the top three onto the main event. B-Main #1 showcased a solid battle for the transfer spots as Dave Jamison would take the win followed by Eric Hatfield and Luke Jordan. B-Main #2 was all Rich Michael Jr. as he set sail to take the checkers followed by Brian Whiteman and Seth Daniels.

As the racing action continued it was a ‘ten not in’ non-qualifier event that featured the first six cars to not make the a-main as well as the fastest two qualifiers and top two in track points that did not race their way into the big dance. It was local racer Clint Keenan that would set the quickest pace and ultimately take the win over Mark Dickson and Travis Dickson. Joel Watson was making a strong bid for the top spot from near the back before looping his hot rod in turn #4 with just ten to go.

After two days, forty-four race teams, four heats, two b-mains, and a non-qualifier it was a twenty car field that would roll onto the track to make up the fifty lap “Buckeye Nationals” starting grid. The field was led to the green by a pair of Zanesville, OH natives, Wisecarver and Wilson. Wisecarver took the early lead but was immediately hounded by Nick Hoffman. Hoffman wasted little time moving to the lead and setting a torrid pace until mechanical heart break found the leader at the half way point as he brought out a caution slowing through turn #2.

Rich Michael was up to 5th from 14th when a broken shock would end his weekend during the same caution. The yellow would give Jacob Hawkins the point from his sixth starting spot. He would continue to distance himself from the rest of the field. Meanwhile, fifth starting Jackie Boggs would battle near the front until mechanical gremlins would end his bid for the lead as well. Other cars on the move were Rick Aukland from ninth, Jason Montgomery from eighth, and John Burdette from seventh.

One final caution would wave with just three to go. Hawkins looked to have the race in hand until the restart when the duo of Aukland and Montgomery applied serious pressure to the back of the leader. Montgomery ripped around the high line while Aukland tried to work underneath Hawkins for the lead. The trio dueled side by side over the next two laps with 2Brothers Motorsports pilot Jacob Hawkins barely edging Aukland and Montgomery at the line. The win marks Hawkins second tour victory this season and continues his dominance of major modified wins throughout the East.

“You have to commend Brad and his crew on working hard on this track, although it had some places in it we were able to race this weekend and put on a good show. I have to thank Junior, Tom, Bubba, Colin, the whole crew at 2Brothers for allowing me to drive this car for them” exclaimed Hawkins.

“We didn’t race much last year but we hope to do a little more racing this year. The car is getting a lot better we’ve been working hard to get it where it needs to be and tonight it was pretty close” said Aukland.

“Lets go fifty more” stated Montgomery. “That was a lot of fun. I want to congratulate Jacob on another great win” concluded Montgomery.

Following those three to the checkers was Burdette, Wisecarver, Greg Oliver, Dan Davies, Dave Jamison, Kenny Johnson from the tail while piloting a Sansom owned race car after his blew up during the evenings hot lap session and lastly, Luke Jordan would round out the top ten.
